Canon S3...a notch above the S2

Strengths: Long zoom, great gunmetal color gives a professional look, live histogram, IS that works very well, dedicated ISO button, post processing options, nine point grid, gr8 battery life, focus at long zoom.

Weakness: red eye,lcd does not latch on camera perfectly, noise above ISO 200, shutter button and zoom lever a bit loose, noise from lens during movie.

Having used the Canon S2 IS for 2 months, I knoew exactly what I would get with the S3. Firstly, the nice black professional look of the S3 impressed me. I like the histogram, quick startup(under 2 secs), quick flash recycle, shot to shot time(under 2 sec),super quiet zoom 12x,dedicated ISO button, quick focus lock at long zoom.I have mostly used the S3 indoors so far, it definitely produced 90%...

LOVE THIS CAMERA!

Strengths: Amazing zoom, video mode, a lot of shooting modes

Weakness: Can't think of any.

This is not a technical review, I'm just a normal person giving my personal review of the camera. This is the best camera we have ever had. We bought it after reading reviews and seeing sample pictures and video, and it has been a joy to have so far. It is an amazing camera for taking pictures and video at concerts, we know! I've posted our concert pictures and video at different places and...

Excellent Camera

Strengths: Ease of use, Quality of Pictures

Weakness: Small memory card

I've had this camera for about a month, and this is my first experience with a digital superzoom. I can say that I am not disappointed. So far I have been very impressed with almost everything. The ease of use is great for amatuers, and the quality of the pictures is excellent. I am still learning to use some features. The only negative comment that I have is regarding the standard 16MB card that...

Canon Powershot S3 IS a winner

Strengths: Variable speed 12X Optical Zoom, Optical stabilization, quick focus, excellent movie capture, function buttons nicely located, tiltable LCD, takes AA batteries, minimal lag between shots.

Weakness: LCD could be larger, Lens cap can come off too easily, must purchase separate adapter to attach protective or creative filters. Movie mode limit of 1GB or 1 hour clips at a time.

I really like the versatility of a 12X optical zoom which I can control the speed of the zoom. It acquires focus quickly compared to other cameras I've sampled. The optical image stabilizer works great and doesn't reduce quality of picture like digital IS does. I normally carry my Casio Exilim EX-Z750 in my pocket or brief case for everyday shots, but this Canon is the perfect combination of...

Great Camera

Strengths: Super zoom, great picutres.

Weakness: None.

What a camera! The pictures are great with sharp images from corner to corner, a 12x zoom lens, and an extremely effective Optical Image Stabilizer. The benefits of the the Optical Stabilizer cannot be understated on a camera with such a long zoom range. When you zoom into maximum telephoto every slight movement of your hands results in a huge movement at the lens. With the stabilizer though it...

Great Camera, worth the Upgrade if you get a good...

Strengths: Zoom, Quality Pictures, Love the color switch and stitching technology (which you can also get on other Canon models), Image Stabilization

Weakness: None so far

This was my 1st digital camera. I spent 3-4 months reading reviews, watching prices and debating with myself what I really wanted in a camera. Finally I decided that the S2 was the best fit for me, even though it promised to be a little more complicated for me than the average camera. However, the s3 went on sale at Dell and I bought it instead for roughly the same price as the s2. The s3 looks...

I am so glad I bought this...

Strengths: zoom, night shots, functionality, crisp images, fast start up time, easy printing with Pictbridge printers, great battery life, selection of shooting modes for versatility and creativity

Weakness: Flash not automatically up when needed, some menus are difficult to get to, can't see subject on LCD and through viewfinder simultaneously, 16MB SD card

I had a G2 for quite some time. Loved it but there were definite limits. When my father passed away I inherited his 10D, too big and complicated for my kind of shooting. So I decided to get a smaller camera with good zoom. I waited for Canon to come out with the S3 IS and then decided between that and the S2 IS. Glad I waited! This camera is great and perfect for me to carry in my handbag. I can...

Powershot S3 IS Digital Camera - Great Camera

Strengths: Fast Super zoom - fast switch from zoom to tele. Just the right size and weight, not compact, not SLR. Flip-and-twist LCD.

Weakness: Some functions are through somewhat complicated menus - takes time getting used to. Flash is not automatic. You have to raise it in order to use it. Noise in most ISO levels.

I got the S3 IS camera as a replacement for my A95. I am really satisfied by its speed and responsiveness. It feels very nice in your hand, it's not too bulky (although not compact by any means) and it helps in getting steady shots. The image stabilization helps as well in this area. Overal speed is very good, be it menu navigation, zooming in and out, shutter lag or starting up time. Somewhat...

CANON S3 IS

Strengths: I am an amateur only by any means, but this camera makes me look like a pro. It leaves a lot of room for beginners mistakes.

Weakness: I haven't found any yet. I guess with the price of chips they could have thrown in a much bigger one to start with.

I used another brand digital camera for quite awhile. It was broken beyond repair. I did a ton of research and this is what I picked to replace it. I am in the country and most of my pics are birds, deer, and such. I am as happy as one can be with a camera. Action shots, stills, and the Zoom is out of this world. And as I mentioned it is very forgiving for beginners. A pet peeve of mine is...

First impressions

Strengths: Amazing Long zoom range. Excellent IS image estabilizer.Very Good photo quality "A bit Soft" Like DSLR. Great Battery Life. If DSLR is so much for you. This is your camera.

Weakness: A bit of JPEG artefact in Super fine Mode " Very minor" and visble at Full size 6 MP. A bit o Noise in Shadows visible only at 100% full size but if you use Neat image or Noiseware not a problem.

You simple can't buy nothing better than this. Only DSLR beat it . Sony DSC-H1-2 can be similar but not equal. ISO 800 A bit too noisy. That the mayor problem. Sorry for me english . Sergio España (Spain)

Great First Step

This camera is a great alternative to spending above $500 and still getting better quality than the traditional point and shoot digi's. Now the picture and options aren't going to be as great as say a 'Leica,' but here you get what you pay for, and apparently quality is getting cheaper.

DCRP Review: Canon PowerShot S3 IS

Overall, I really like the PowerShot S3, and it earns my enthusiastic recommendation. Yes, it has a few flaws, but doesn't everything? For people wanting a solid and capable ultra zoom camera, this one should be high on your list. If you yearn for a few more controls, external flash support, and manual zoom and focus rings then you'll want to look at the Panasonic FZ30 or the Fuji S9000.
