Casio Exilim EX-Z50 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Size, Resolution, Options, macro lens, have several cool features despite the small size. Macro lens is pretty good, with a minimal distance of approx 6 inches from target. Very good low light pics.

Weakness: Pentax lens (although good quality photos), small internal memory (16MB, YOU MUST BUY A SD MEMORY CARD!!), very primitive software (internet Expolrer based). Nothing major.

I bought the camera to just carry around to clubs and take pics on the fly. I soon realized that the quality was so good that I started taking photos of scenery that I would previously only dare to use my high resoution film camera. I take a lot of nature pics with my fim camera, and now I also use the Casio Exilim Z-50. It is my first digital camera, but I love it. One drawback is the small internal memory (16MB with 9.5 free). I bought a SD memory card for it when I bought the camera. A SD-Ultra-Fast Card is recommended. The card (made by Toshiba) allows the photo to be stored more quickly. One other draw back is the software on your PC to access/alter the photos. It is "multi-step" process, and not very diverse. The only other drawback is that it loads up ALL photos everytime you sync the camera ot the PC, so you MUST delete the photos from the camera to avoid a 5-10 minute loading (copying) process each time (if you decide to save a bunch of photos to the SD card for long term). Battery life is good. Weight and size are perfect. Saddle is ok. I RECOMMEND A SCREEN PROTECTOR! if you decide to buy this product (just cut ones that are made for PDAs and palms. Remember, for those of you pros, the lens is a PENTAX lens. I am not sure if that is good or not, just of note. IN the high resolution, the photo is about 1.9MB, and 0.9MB in Low-Med resoultion. Overall, I love this camera. It was worth what I paid ($265 for camera including shipping, $40 for 256MB Toshiba UltraFast memory SD-card).
REMEMBER:
--Screen Protector
--SD Memory Card
--Carry Case
--HAVE FUN!!

No digital camera will come with a large amount of memory unless the store is offering a deal to get a larger memory card for free.

Casio Exilim EX-Z50 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Small compact size, fast, big megapixel vise, long life battery (300 shots on one charge, for sure)

Weakness: Poor red eye reduction, 30% of shots is out of focus, use of gradle

Pretty good small, light high resolution camera, which you can take anywere in your pocket whit out people around notice it is there (in the pocket). Has a lot of nice usefull functions. The BIG + of this camera is a battery life. I took 220 pictures (most of them with flash) and the battery indicator was still full. I do not like the fact that this camera cannot be connected to a TV or straight to a printer.
Averall, it is good little toy, which I always carry with me now.

Well, your pics are out of focus probably because you either have the manual focus ON, or you do not press the button down half way to get the photo in focus before shooting it. I have taken more than 200 pics with mine, and only 1 was out of focus (Focus was set to PAN, which gives least focus anyhow). Good luck.

Casio Exilim EX-Z50 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Small size can put in shirt pocket, speed (no lag time when taking pictures), the best shot options are really pretty cool.

Weakness: LCD cannot be seen in bright sunlight. White balance is a little off compared to my Olympus, the white from the Casio looked a little darker needs adjustmenti every time you turn the camera on.

The small size of this camera, and the speed are the reasons I purchased this camera. It is so small that it fits in my shirt pocket and so light I almost forget it is there! The speed is excellent compared to my Olympus. It turns on rapidly and takes a picture when you press the button, very little lag time. The only time I noticed any lag was when I tried to take multiple pictures in row. A high speed memory card helps.

My only complaints about the camera are 1)that you cannot see the giant LCD screen in bright light, but it does have a optical view finder if you want to take snapshots. 2)The white balance was off for the pictures I took with this camera compared to my Olympus. I was taking pictures of ptarmigans (white birds on snow) and the white in the pictures from the Casio look greyish, it was a very bright day and the pictures make it look like it was overcast and cloudy. You can adjust the white balance but it resets everytime you turn the camera off, and you really don't know how the pictures are turning out until you upload them to your computer.

Casio Exilim EX-Z50 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: The major strength for the EXZ50 is it's compact, fit in your pocket, easy, 5mp digipics, 380 pic battery!!!! It uses easily obtained, affordably priced SD memory cards.

Weakness: Major weakness is shutter lag. Click and wait for actuall take. Not capable of manual setting of FStop and shutter speed. These trade offs for the price are offset by conveniences and handiness!

Got the camera as an adjunct to my Canon EOS Rebel Digital. It will provide me the candid snapping ability when the Rebel is too much to lug along on a family adventure. We're a two camera family now. The 5mp pics give you some great cropping ops without sacrificing printed image quality. It's FUN and easy to use for nontechie types like a number of my family members.

Casio Exilim EX-Z50 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Incredible Camera for the price. 5.0mp, excellent quality. Long battery life, very easy to use.

Weakness: Wish camera came with a larger memory card. Sometimes its a pain to charge the camera since it needs to be put in a dock to charge it.

I would definitely recommend buying a second battery so you don't have to lug around the docking base to charge it. Overall, it's a great camera and well worth the money.

Frustratingly horrid pictures

Strengths: Size

Weakness: Quality of pictures

I read a lot of reviews before buying this camera, some of them were very good, and some were very bad. So, I decided to take a chance and thought I would figure it out. It didn't happen, and once again I learned that I should trust user reviews. The pictures come out HORRIBLE. I don't know how people manage to get nice pictures with this camera. Maybe there is a way, but I haven't discovered it. I tried changing the settings, followed some of the instructions other people posted in their reviews, nothing works. Even if there is a way to adjust the setting in order to get decent pictures, it shouldn't be this complicated. But honestly, I don't think it's possible to get a decent picture with a decent color. People look awful, almost scary in my pictures taken with this camera, and so does everything else. I am sorry to return this camera, because it's a cute little thing, but it's simply not doing the job.

Casio Exilim EX-Z50 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Small size, movie mode, advertised battery life

Weakness: Proprietary (read expensive) battery, but if Casio's claim to improved battery life due to new technology is accurate, that should not be a problem.

I used to wonder how someone could write a review after only using a product for a day or 2. Now I know.

I have been looking for a pocket sized digicam for about a year now. My Minolta Dimage 5 is great, but due to it's size, I leave it at home a lot.

After what I think was a pretty exhaustive search of the market, I finally settled on the Casio. I couldn't be happier with my decision.

The 2" screen is good. The only difference between the EXZ50 and the EXZ55 is the 55 has a 2.5" screen. I didn't feel it was worth the extra $50.00. The menus are clear and easy to read on the 2" screen.

Every review I have read complains about the flash on the mini cameras. READ THE SPECS. The flash on any of them is only good out to a couple of feet. This is fine for general amateur use.

I have shot less that a hundred pictures so far, but the quailty is great on what I have done. I am used to a 7x optical zoom on my Minolta, so I have to get used to the 3x on the Casio. My recommendation on any of these cameras is to turn off the digital zoom and forget it's there.

I didn't care about the movie mode when looking for a camera, but I have used this feature at least twice so far. It's great. With a 512mb high speed card, I can get 27 minutes of 320x240 movie with sound. I filmed my son's 4th grade basketball game, and he actually used it as a training film.

I don't know about battery life yet. I put the camera in the charging stand every night. I did use it extensively on the first day to set menus, take movies and the general fooling around one does with a new toy. According to the battery meter, I never put a dent in the charge. If Casio's claims are accurate, a spare battery should not be necessary. It only take three hours to fully charge the battery. If I was going on vacation, I would take the charging stand with me, but otherwise, I can't imagine using the camera so much as to drain the battery before I have an opportunity to put it back on the charger.

I would recommend this camera to anyone looking for a pocket sized camera.

Casio Exilim EX-Z50 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Small size, big LCD screen, very fast response time, battery life, docking station.

Weakness: Docking station is needed to charge it.

This is a very nice camera. It takes the picture almost immediately after you press the button, which is something that is missing from many other cameras (like Pentax Optio S/S4 I used to own). It comes with docking station, which is very nice because you don't need to take out the SD card every time you want to see the picture on the computer. Very nice big LCD screen. The camera is only a little bigger than a Pentax Optio S/S4 but have bigger and easier to use buttons.

It has the smallest power adapter I have ever seen up to this time, however, you need the docking station also to charge it. But since you can take a few hundred pictures on a single charge (at least it's Casio's claim, I could not test it), you may not need to carry the charger for short vacations.

Picture quality is pretty good, since I did not have many other cameras, I cannot compare with other cameras. I compared the picture quality with Optio S4 and couldn't see much difference.

Casio Exilim EX-Z50 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Small size, large LCD screen, long battery life, ergonomic design.

Weakness: Supplied charging cradle only charges battery when battery is in camera.

In my opinion, this is a very well designed, reasonably priced, digital camera. The tiny size, great resolution (5 MegaPixel), optical zoom (3x), long battery life, and large LCD screen make it the perfect camera for most consumers. From my experience owning a larger digital camera, the most important aspect of this camera is its size. Think about it, we buy digital cameras to take pictures. The size of the camera is directly related to your chances of actually having it with you when you need it. Until some of the recent camera introductions from Pentax, Casio, Sony, and Canon, capable digital cameras were larger and close in size to traditional cameras. This is a digital camera that you can easily carry with you everywhere - smaller than most cell phones.

As for the other brands I mentioned above, I believe Casio has hit the right mix of performance and cost. Sony's DSC-T1 is priced through the roof, Canon is still trying to drag along its ancient CompactFlash technology, and Pentax has had some technical difficulties. There are a few great digital camera review sites that give more independent opinions of most digital cameras available today (search for Steve and digicam).

In regard to the charging cradle inconvenience, you can buy a dedicated battery charger that allows you to charge the battery separate from the camera. These chargers generally have both 12 VDC and 120 VAC connectors to allow both home and car charging. This type of charger is available from many sellers on the big auction site for about $20. Additional rechargeable batteries are also available from that location for around $15 (a wise investment to have at least one extra battery charged and ready to go).

Casio Exilim EX-Z50 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Good, size, great pictures, easy to use. The cradle makes it ez to charge and also view and print pictures.

Weakness: very small memory, should come with bigger built in memory. Also should have A/C adaptor.

Over all a great camera, just got a 512 SD card for $50 and I have gotten many super pictures. Biggest print 8X10 and was very sharp. Would strongly recommend.

Casio Exilim EX-Z50 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Size, features, options to take different style photos, size

Weakness: None noted

I elected to buy this Casio after a review in Conde Nast Travel. I was looking for a camera that I could put into my pocket for travel and was 5 megapixels in case I wanted to blow up my pictures. I had been using a Nikon 5000 for several years and although it takes great pictures it was a bit too large for my likes. The Casio appears perfect. I would suggest it for anyone who wants a point and shoot camera for travel that will fit into a pocket or purse.

Casio Exilim EX-Z50 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: small size, picture quality, user friendly, large screen

Weakness: internal memory- would have liked it to come with a memory card, without one, it holds about 4 pictures.

other than the lack of memory, which was easily resolved by buying a $15 256mb card, i think this is a great camera. i am a professional photographer, and wanted a personal camera that was easy to carry around, easy to use, and high quality. after doing a lot of hunting, i chose this camera and i'm very pleased with my decision. i would recommend it to anyone who wants high quality at a good price.

Casio Exilim EX-Z50 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Very compact and lightweight, large bright display, most-used functions on buttons, logical menus, full-frame viewfinder with eyeglasses, easy recharging & uploading via cradle, long battery life.

Weakness: No carrying case.

I will use this as my primary digital camera because it's so pocketable and easy to use. There are 23 pre-programmed modes (like Pets, Portrait, Sunset, Flowers...) that make the right settings for you. I spent a lot of time comparing ultra-compacts and this is a clear winner at a great price.

Casio Exilim EX-Z50 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: This is one of the smallest digital cameras I have seen. We have the earlier EX-z40 model and it has been completely satisfactory. Battery life is outstanding.

Weakness: I can identify no major weaknesses.

This is a very under rated model...not carried in many
stores. I think when it becomes known what a good camera
it is, it will be a big seller.

Casio Exilim EX-Z50 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: - Ultra compact - Battery life - Picture quality - Preset and user definable snapshot modes - Metal body - Internal memory (at least this one has some)

Weakness: - The dock does not charge the camera when connected to PC - Lousy add-on software - No memory card with the camera (use can still use the internal memory for testing) - Cannot attach lenses

I brought this one after a lot of research. I wanted a compact camera (one that fits in my pocket) as I hated my previous one coz of its size.
You will need a day or so to play around with it to get comfortable with the functions.
The pictures are great for a point and shoot and do not try to compare it with a SLR. The acid test for this category is the picture quality at low light. This one was OK with the automatic (snapshot) mode but when I created my own the results were amazing. I would recommend playing with the camera and creating your own mode before the everyday use.
I would highly recommend this camera.

Casio Exilim EX-Z50 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: compact size, fast response time, sleek design, many style modes, large viewing screen

Weakness: LCD quality, user interface...?

We got this camera as a gift and have been pleased with the results. This is a great camera to take on a night out. The camera is tiny...almost too tiny. If you have big hands, using this camera may be extremely frustrating. There are specific style modes set up for many different situations, even one for snapping shots of your favorite pet.

The LCD screen is bigger than most, but its picture quality sucks. The shutter lag is minimal, but shooting action shots may result in heavily blurred photos.

Casio Exilim EX-Z50 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: compact, beautiful pictures, docking station works great.

Weakness: not found any yet

This is a 'point & shoot' camera, and it works great for me. I bought it for $280 (including tax) and $34 shipped for 512mb SD Kingston Elite Pro. *** Can't go wrong for a 5MP cam w/ this price *** Highly recommend. So far I love it.

Casio Exilim EX-Z50 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Compact Size, Battery Life, and Quality of Pictures

Weakness: Haven't found any

This is my third digital camera. This camera offers so much for its compact size. The picture quality is great. I've decided to turn off the digital zoom and use only the optical zoom. The pictures taken of my dog and people are fantastic. Although I haven't used the movie mode that much, just for testing, it works great. I took a photo in low lighting and it came out just as if I had standard lighting. This camera is awesome! Would highly recommend!

Casio Exilim EX-Z50 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: Ultra thin and great battery life.

Weakness: Frequent blurry pictures. Did not match true color very well.

My wife and I bought this camera right before going on vacation. We were also considering the Canon SD400 and Pentax Optio S5i. We went with the Casio over the Canon because of price and did not see any difference between the Casio and Pentax except the Casio had a better battery life. I brought my Canon S200 along on our vacation. We took several similar shots with the Canon S200 and Casio Ex-Z50. The Casio had good response time (especially compared to my Canon), but pictures often came out blurry. Of the pictures that weren't blurry, the picture quality was not as good as the Canon. We got to the point where we did not even want to use the Casio anymore. When we got home, we did a blind comparison (blind to brand not picture) of the similar pictures we took with each camera in varying conditions. Of the 22 pictures we had to compare, we only thought 4 pictures from the 5MP Casio camera were better than my 2MP Canon camera. We plan on returning the Casio. Now the decision is between the Pentax and Canon.

Casio Exilim EX-Z50 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: compact & sturdy, comes with cradle, good quality video recording mode, fairly easy to operate even without reading the manual, optical viewfinder

Weakness: expected better quality pictures for a 5MP digicam, some pictures come out good and some barely acceptable, takes quite some time than i'm used to between shots as flash recharges

Took several pictures under flourescent (4 x 60W) lighting and some came out really good like the colorful books lined on the shelves and the snap of the PC monitor which is currently displaying a somewhat busy and colorful website. However some pictures also came out somewhat pixelized like the snapshot of a colorful toy box about 24in x 36in, the living room furniture with dark stained armoire and dark green sofa, and little kids sitting on a black leather chair. The picture display on the camera itself was kinda grainy and I was hoping that this would not carryover to the actual picture, but it did.

I tried the camera again in daylight during a little league baseball game around 7pm CDT. Most of the pictures turned out fine. Both the action shots & still shots looked good. The flash, ISO, white balance, and most other settings were in AUTO. The sun made the LCD useless so I was just glad this digicam had a good optical viewfinder.

I really wanted a simple point-and-shoot digicam which was compact yet sturdy. I would have opted for the Canon SD200 or SD300, but there was just so many complaints about LCD damage that it really made me opt for this Casio model instead. There's a lot more manual settings that you can toy with on this digicam to probably make the pictures come out good. But if you're looking for a point-and-shoot digicam which could handle just about anything when you set it to AUTO-mode, this may not be the best choice for you. Except for its compactness, this digicam is not that much better than my old 2MP Canon A10. JMHO.

Casio Exilim EX-Z50 5 Megapixel Compact Camera

Strengths: The product strenght is its brand, also its size it makes it appealing

Weakness: the warranty too short, it should have a longer warranty to make it more attractive

After paying all that money for the camera, it should at least include a carrying case with it. Cheaper cameras from other brands do come with a case. Little things like that make the competitors more appealing.

OK Camera but wouldn't purchase again

Strengths: Good pictures with outside lighting

Weakness: Red Eye reduction doesn't seem to work at all. Night photos of fireworks didn't work well. Any pics you take inside are very grainey. Nice size camera for a woman~~too small for a man.

I've had the camera for 8 months now and was very satisfied with any of the outside pictures or pictures that had a great deal of lighting around to compensate for the basic lack of a flash ~ doesn't really help unless you are on top of the subject. Inside pics in dimly lit areas are very very grainy and I have tried every setting to improve them with no luck. The camera comes with different settings but even when I put the camera on the firework setting all of the fireworks came out blurry. The size of the camera is great for a woman with small hands but is clumsy in a mans larger hands. The casing is very flimsy and was dented when accidently dropped about 3 or 4 ft from the ground, while my husband was taking a pic of my daughter. The lens which protrudes while taking a pic would also no longer retract into the camera with this very small accident. BEWARE ~~ if you drop the camera plan on buying a new one. Casio charges a flat fee of $200 plus other small fees. Total charge to repair $220.43. I requested that the camera be sent back without repairs so they couldn't reuse my perfectly good lens or reuse the battery or any other good parts and there is a shipping fee to return the camera. By the way, a new camera from many dealers on line only costs somewhere between $228 and $250. As stated earlier the camera works good in good lighting situations ~~ poorly in dimly lit situations. The only reason that I would not consider purchasing the camera again is due to the unfortunate way that Casio sticks you with a high repair bill.
