Musicals were pure escapism and this is no exception. Great score, fine dancing, entertaining story. You want reality? Watch "Cops" on television. Loved Natalie and Rita Moreno (Who probably should have been Maria, too ethnic for Hollywood). Richard Chakris (Bernardo) was fairly convincing as a tough guy, the rest of the fellas, not so much.

Watch it for the great dancing. Just cover your ears when the characters stop singing and talk to each other.

West Side Story

Strengths: Singing and Dancing

Weakness: N/A

I still watch the movie over and over again. The best musical of all times. I'm 49 year old and the movie still makes me dance and sing. Not a boring part to the movie.

WOW. If you are not gay, this movie is not your cup of tea. The fruity dancing basketball players? The fruity street fight dance? Unwatchable.

I did this one (off Broadway) so I am partial. I love the music and dancing . I would have voted this my favorite musical until "Moulin Rouge" came along. Natalie Wood did a wonderful acting part but why couldn't they get a real singer/actress to do the lead role instead of the obvious dubbing of Ms. Wood's voice

Never saw the actual movie, although I did see the musical live a few years back. I'd rate it this high on music alone. When you're a Jet, you're a Jet all the way!!!

Great movie, in its time and place. Nat Wood was a really good actress. She the best anyone could at that time in the given role. Today we would have used singers, and accurate types (i.e. Puerto Ricans etc.) ...but for then it was really good. Still entertaining to view.

Leonard Bernstein's magnificent setting of Romeo and Juliet. It is possibly as well known in the U.S. as is the Shakespeare play on which it is based. Contains some of the finest music ever composed for a musical, with tunes which are engaging, memorable, contrapuntal and brilliantly orchestrated. An amazing tour-de-force by one of the most talented musicians ever to live in the U.S.

West Side Story 50th Anniversary Edition; With Book;...

Everything about this film is great except the leads. Interesting retelling of Romeo and Juliet in the 1950s urban setting with racial overtones. Tremendous, memorable musical score (thank you, Lenny Bernstein) and outstanding choreography (J. Robbins was a genius). Very decent acting for a musical (especially Ned Glass, John Astin and Simon Oakland in small supporting roles) and fine art direction. Russ Tamblyn (Riff) is a very underrated song and dance type. However, Natalie Wood is totally miscast as Maria: it's hard to suspend disbelief when a California girl of Russian descent tries to come off as a Puerto Rican gal from the Bronx. Also, Marnie Nixon's voice was dubbed in for Natalie's singing parts, which is pretty lame for a film of this stature (Nixon also ghost-sang for that notable no-talent, Audrey Hepburn, in "My Fair Lady"). Richard Breymer, as Tony, was totally wooden and ridiculous. They tried to make a star of this guy in the late 50s and early 60s, but failed. No wonder, as he's totally talentless. The only fault of this picture is that the producers made, once again, the Cardinal Error of Hollywood Musicals, i.e., putting non-singers in lead roles for the sake of box office appeal. Doesn't work here as in any other case, but the other attributes of this film compensate for this, which is very rare indeed.

Ok the songs are above average for an old musical but there are a few things I can't get over. First of all, Natalie Wood as a Puerto Rican? She's one of the whitest actresses in Hollywood and they make her a Puerto Rican. Explain that one to me. Then, you have these big killer "thugs" dancing like ballerinas? Huh?

A great adaptation of Romeo and Juliet with some southside Bronx flavor. Natalie Wood shines in this movie. If you like hopeless romantic movie, this timeless feature is for you. It holds up very well with time.

The movie 'The Warriors" was popular when my kids were teens so I thought it was a good idea to show them a gang related movie from my era. Needless to say, I still haven,t lived it down, as my sons found it very corny. In my high school, every boy was wearing a purple shirt after that movie came out. It,s tough to get old!

"West Side Story" is a truly wonderful film. Everything from the performances, to the dance numbers, to the songs to the directing is just fantastic. As far as I'm concerned, it is the best musical ever made, running neck-and-neck with "The Wizard of Oz." Simply fantastic!

This is a very good romantic modern day version of Romeo & Juliet. It has a very sad ending and lots of good songs I just wish Tony & Maria could have found a way to be together.

A modern day Romeo and Juliet. a wonderful movie that has romance, good music. Heartbreaking at the end.I think this movie even has lessons about what happens with hatred.I still find myself rooting for Tony and Maria and wishing the ending could be different and they could be together.

I have to agree with everyone who says that West Side Story has wonderful songs and dance sequences-I have the soundrack and I love it to death. And being an actress, I can respect it's broadway roots. But I just have one huge problem that seems to prevent me from thoroughly enjoying this film-Maria doesn't die! Yes, it's kinda morbid, but West Side Story is supposed to be a kinda hip-keen updated version of Romeo and Juliet, right? Well the whole damn premise of R&J is that they love each other so much that they can't picture life without the other one. It's so ruined for me that Maria can just walk of-shaken, but, I know, ultamately uneffected. Damned studioheads just didn't want to kill off Natalie Wood. There's some irony for ya, huh?

A musical that I was brought up on. Yes, this truly belongs in the "classical movies" section.Beautiful songs that have lasted (well, my mum still sings them round the house) and v original at the time.Only small hitch is the beginning scene, where the guys all click their fingers in time, and try and look macho too. Bit of a contradiction in terms, I thought, but carried off as well as could be expected by the actors.

New York gangs, they sing, they fight, they fall in love. True classic deals with race relations as a whole gang fights a Puerto Rican gang. But despite all the fighting, it's a romantic love story.

The best musical ever made (movie-wise)! The modern Romeo and Juliet, the two that were forbidden to love and did. Their love brought together two communities that hated each other and taught the message of tolerance and compassion. The main key between the romance of Maria and Tong said that love conquered all! The classic music that moves the story along makes the movie entertaining and a true piece of art.

Wow! I own this movie. It is definitely a true classic. I laughed. I cried. I was stunned and totally entertained by this film. The music in it is mainly up-beat making you want to get up and dance. The songs get stuck in your head. This movie is like a Romeo and Juliet type of story. It is really, really good. If you haven't seen it yet, you should definitely treat yourself to renting it!

It is a topical (well, it was at the time) well constructed story that dealt with the problems America was just beginning to come to terms with- gangs and racial prejudice!! Plus, the score was "Hip, Daddio!" I liked the story taken from Shakespeare and modernized. I still sing songs from the score.

West Side Story I liked because it was a story of love with different culture of two groups of people or gangs that didn't get along but for the love between the boy and girl. It had good singing and dancing, but the story between the gangs at its best was just as compelling.
